Hallo Easecon,

ThielHater

Darf hier jeder reinschreiben?

Das zeigt schon ziemlich deutlich was dahinter steckt...

Echt super Arbeit was ihr hier leiste *Daumen hoch*

Hey ! I just found this site and I'm amazed ! I played gothic since i was 10, and therefore it's my favourite game ever. I was really hoping for Piranha Bytes re-creating the old games instead of doing new ones. And since they didn't do anything with gothic since part 3... They probably won't. And then I stumble upon this site ! You guys are doing great work. I wish you no problems with starting the game, I mean like items or NPCs spawning in the walls. Or maybe you are gonna script all that stuff by yourselves ? Anyway, good luck !

Do you speak a bit german/dutch?

Yes, I am a South African (no proxy or vacation, although I do sometimes go on vacation in different provinces)! I have dutch and german heritage, as most South African and Namibian citizens.

Since my discovery of this mod, I've kept a hawk-eye for any interesting developments. I always have little ideas in my head where a game should be improved (but never act upon it), and I'm always excited when the gaming community gathers to improve a game!

@DiabloFire: He is right, the latest news will always be found in our forum/board. Important news will be posted on the website, but I don't consider most of them being important enough - sadly this leads to people thinking, we would be dead. By the way, are you really from South Africa or using a proxy, on vacation, what so ever? This would make you our first intercontinental visitor. Anyway, thank you for your comment.

Hey guys.

I am really really impressed with the footage I've seen. I remember accidently downloading this game as a ripped version, though I've never heard of or seen it. Boy, was I blown away by Gothic 1. Only recently bought the retail gothic collection box thing.

Anyways, I can't wait for for this mod to finish. Good luck guys!

PS. When I read the news section, the latest news was from 2011. I immediately assumed this was a dead project. But, from the looks of the guest book, its not!

@Neeedles: Don't worry about the NPCs, objects and other stuff, it will all be there. The demo is kind of a tech demo.

I can't say, if the final release will be for Gothic or Gothic 2. Personally I prefer Gothic, but we have to rely on GEngine by Kerrax (an improved version of the original game engine), because the original Gothic has problems with the complexity of the world (or in technical language, the polygon count is to high for that old lady). Anyway, Gothic 2 is a good solution either.

You are free to donate from any country via PayPal. I don't understand, when you are asked for a country. Are you talking about the form on the PayPal website or our projects website?

@Naik: Well, further mesh manipulations may be reasonable to make the transition look better, but in most cases that is not required. The ZenGine is relatively stable relating to high res rextures. As I already said in #219, that is not the problem. This lame and time consuming work is the problem.

Why so offended? I wanted to talk to him about the matter in general and your request to help. You have to give us some time for that.

And of course I know that for the software myself. Atleast for a transition texture you dont need to make a mesh? RIGHT?
You think that the ZenGine engine woudln't be able to load a few more transition textures? Well first you will need to try it.

Okay EvilTwin will do it.. Say that Naik says Hi and happy new year.

@Naik: Of course I know, that todays personal computers are like mainframes, compared to the personal computers 10 years ago. But not the hardware is the problem, the software is. The ZenGine was not written to run with such a load of complex meshes and high res textures, todays computer hardware is able to handle.

About the transitions topic: As I said, it's repetitive, lame work and I will talk to EvilTwin about it.

Same goes for me. I always tried to learn more about the people that worked on my favorite games.

A guy is working on a mod to solve this no clip issue of rain&snow effects but still the whole Creation Engine (skyrim engine).. sucks. This no clip issues were present even back when Elder Scrolls 3 came out.

Dont look at PC requirements for the mod so much.. memory is cheap. By the time you will complete the mod there will be DDR4 that will cost like 20€ for 1 4gb ram. In the original Gothic there are many transitions. I have that time. I have seen that you did many transitions where in Gothic the game begins. The transitions like that should be everywhere. I think there will be more places were the transitions would look suitable then were they will look ugly. Believe me I could learn how to do it and work on it. While you work on the mines and orc cemetery I could do the changes for the transitions myself if example EvilTwin wouldnt do it.

Yeah that textures is not as charming as a Gothic one.

@Naik: Well, I am interested in the people, whose creativity and passion led to one of my favorite games. But I don't know, if there is code of the ZenGine inside the Genome engine.

What you say about Skyrim sounds curious. If I ever play it, I will pay attention to that issue.

In general (relating to the ZenGine), for every transition from one texture to another, there is a new texture needed. This increases memory requirements and decreases performance, but that's not the problem at the moment. Creating good transitions between two textures (because simple ones mostly look ugly) in a 2d graphic program takes time and correctly placing the texture on the mesh in a 3d graphic program takes time either. It's just repetitive work no one really likes, though I have to admit it looks better in some cases. I will talk to EvilTwin about it.

Oh and I am also not happy with that slop/rough earth texture either, I planned to change it.

You are right. Still the ZenEngine is old and it wouldnt be used anymore for their new games. Genome Engine may have some lines of code of ZenEngine but then again. Why being afraid so much for an old engine created in 1998. Yeah to survive they need to do comercial shit. And this JoWood childish harsh decitions led to PiranhaBytes to a big fall. I cant even imagine how ambitious those bright heads of PiranhaBytes were for Gothic 3.

Wow you are very informed on PiranhaBytes history .. Its intresting that 3 students wrote the engine. They did quite a good job. To even write some multiplayer code in it. Uhh idea, GothicReloaded and GothicMultiplayer with NPCs xD awesome.

in houses and dungeons the effects are not loaded. When someone goes in a house they load inside the house were there are no windows or sound effects of what is happening outside. This is another thing that I like in Gothic series. Dungeouns and houses are all in one level and they are all accesible without loadings. Okay atleast in Gothic 3. Gothic 1 the mines have loadings.

This is some stuff I mean. Your textures look more detailed and everything but I dont know why you dont use the blending on..look the pictures -> A, B, C.

I know maybe Im just breaking your balls with this. But does it really look ugly to you? If you would let me work for you I would work day and night to make it like in the original Gothic. I would teach myself how. And If I wouldnt know how to do it I would ask for your help.

Thanks <3

@Naik: Well, I wouldn't say, that they are selfish. The crew has changed, their minds have changed and as a company, they have to make economical decisions to stay in business. That's life. JoWood is bankrupt and parts of their insolvency assets have been bought by Nordic Games. Anyway, JoWood was allowed to release games under the Gothic trademark only for a limited time and this time ended before their insolvency. It's true, Gothic 3 has been released as some sort of alpha or beta version because JoWood forced them to do so - Piranha Bytes didn't decide that on their own. As the publisher, JoWood financed the development. So, the game lawfully belonged to them and therefore they were allowed to do so.

Yep, the engine (mainly written by three informatics students) offers some interesting features like the one you mentioned - there is even abandoned multiplayer code in it. But is it true, that in Skyrim it rains everywhere (like in houses or dungeons)?

Hmm.. I have to admit, that some of our textures look cleaner, but the amount of details is much bigger. You should give some examples.

PS: Happy new year, Naik.

Happy 1 januar!
Woow PiranhaBytes is really selfish.. still someone charming should try to change their minds. And I will do it. I will write to them.

They made a wise move and a terrible game. Do you agree?
Soo JoWood will still be the publisher? Hope they wont rush for PiranhaBytes to release again a incomplete game.

Gothic 3 could be much better. I can see they rushed in doing everything. As how it was released it looked like a pre alpha. I played it not long ago with 1.75 unnoficial patch with my HD7850 2gb. I customised the ini file to get the best without getting any glitches. With 8gb of ram I could loud alot of stuff. Very sexy indeed. The thing is that I played so many times Gothic 3 that now I'm bored of it. It's time for a new one.

The thing that I love in Gothic series are the details. Skyrim still has no clip for rain and snow efffects. Gothic 1 that was made 10 years ago had the rain effects clipped nicely. A crack in the roof and rain passes thrugh but where the object is it dosent. Such quality in Gothic 1,2..so awesome. I just need to wait for you to finish the Gothic Reloaded and then I will finnaly play it once again. So please do a good job in doing it. I noticed in some points that the textures are not as rich as the original Gothic. If you dont know where I will point that out and do a screenshoot.

and once again happy new 1 januar <3

@Naik: For some reason they didn't do so until now, I don't think they will do it anyway. According to a former Piranha Bytes member, most of the crew has never been interested in giving people the oppertunity to mod their games.

I don't know, if there is an official statement about it, but after Gothic 3, Piranha Bytes and JoWood may concluded a contract. It's content had to be something like "The Gothic trademark still belongs to Piranha Bytes, but JoWood is allowed to release new games under this trademark for a significant amount of money". Why I think so? The Gothic trademark always belonged to Piranha Bytes, it's owner never changed, you may verify by the public database of the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) as well as the words of Piranha Bytes CEO itself, Michael Rüve. So why would Piranha Bytes let JoWood release more Gothic games? I think, the above is the answer. They probably were tired of the Gothic series and wanted to have a good start with their new game, Risen. As I already said, Piranha Bytes made a "wise move".

Gothic 3? My computer wasn't able to run it without lags. Now, years later, with a patch bigger than 1GB (mostly developed by fans) it's running on the same hardware. What a piece of quality! I played Gothic 3 and felt like being completely lost, without a story, without a red line. The whole game was like "seach Xardas while levelling your char" - not what I expected. The scenery was realistic and the world was really big, but that doesn't make a game worth playable.

Arcania being a Gothic tale, was a tale.

Hmm ZenEngine.. Someone should ask PiranhaBytes to make it open source. Maybe then somoene could code some simple shadow and other effects. That would be awesome.

Hehe.. well I hope now that they have the rights back for Gothic they will repair all mistakes.

What do you think of Gothic 3? as scenary and the size of the world level? I think they did quite a good job to put in that big open world so many contents.

Yeah, Arcania would be ok if it was called only Arcania without that GOTHIC TALE. I was angry enough that they didnt put the feature to swim underwater in Gothic 3. In Arcania you can't even swim. xD

@Naik: Gothic 1 to Gothic 2 - Night of the Raven are based on the ZenGine, not the Genome engine and yes, this is as real as it gets. The old engine doesn't offer fancy shading features.

Yep, but not only that. They gave the add-on to Trine Games! What the f**k is wrong with those guys, giving a game series like Gothic to an unknown, indian developer? It's like kicking yourself in the balls for no reason.. and now, JoWood knows so. Retards!

I think Spellbound made the best out of what they had. I didn't play Arcania, but all I have seen was okay. Nevertheless, it was not like the real Gothic.

Thanks for the video. So this is as good as the tree can get for Genome engine RIGHT?

I hope they get the nostalgic felling of Gothic 1. I mean Gothic 1 had the best looking scenary. I would stop caring and believing in them if they will try to do another Risen game. Risen can't be as big as a succes like Gothic 2 was.

Haha..right after defeating the sleeper xD

Yeah damn JoWood.. I imagine what would be of Gothic 3 if JoWood wouldn't rush and force PiranhaBytes to release the unfinished game just because JoWood has some financial problems and needs fast money.

@Naik: Hi Naik, there are no new pictures, but you may take a look at our christmas present.

The Piranha Bytes crew as well as their attitude has changed over time. Concerning Piranha Bytes new game: If they work at Risen 3, I don't care. If they work at a new series, I don't care. If they work at Gothic 4/5, well.. I care a little, but only if they abandon every game of the series released after Gothic 2 - Night of the Raven and deliver an alternative Gothic 3.

The nameless hero could wake up in the mine valley and be like "Whoa.. what a horrible dream!".

The whole series has been so f**ked up by JoWood since Gothic 2! Even worse, after Gothic 3, Piranha Bytes willingly let them do so. Maybe this strategy has profited for them (JoWood is bankrupt and Piranha Bytes had great success with the Risen series), but not for the Gothic series and the true fans.

Oh and yes, I speak for myself, not the whole team.

The Bard's Song by Blind Guardian? Well, most of their members come from Krefeld, it's not that far away from my town. I have been there a few times.

Well however, this is not the right place to discuss your personal life, but there are better ways to spend your lifetime - especially if you don't go to school nor have a job, except your parents are rich.

I will think about it.

@Naik: The New Camp is not done, yet. Since the beginning of the mod we work at more than one place simultanously. Adding the NPCs takes just some minutes.

Hi... NICE work!
I was dreaming about Gothic and Gothic 2 that I would make a remake on Unreal Tech 4.. But that will never happen so I remembered ThielHater and here I come and saw some sexy pics and so there is still hope. I miss the trilogy so much. I was waiting to get intelligent enough to play it. When I saw your first texturepack on World of Gothic I said to myself what if he released some early stuff and I found this project? Now I'm waiting for this to come out to play gothic. WORK HARD!!!!!!

Hi Elijah,
you are right, Gothic doesn't support texture merging/blending like the Source Engine. Gothic 2 supports a similar, simpler feature called "detail textures". It offers the possibility to display a texture on another texture, as these two screenshots show (no detail, with detail) - sadly this feature is not (well) documented and flawed. Anyway, we blend the textures at image level, that's all we can do.

PS: Unreal Tournament 2004 has the same feature as Gothic 2.

Hi Elijah,
I am not sure what you mean, when you say we shall "make transitions between levels smoother" in relation with your example, the field of the Rice lord. You may look at this picture, it shows what we will change (please notice the mesh in this screenshot is original). What else may we do?

What I can say about the textures is, that we smooth the transitions and vary them to look more realistic. But doing so is a bit annoying.

Greetings
ThielHater

Hi, guys! I`m very pleased to see my favorite game with this "boosted" graphics. Good job! However, I have some idea for your team. As I`ve seen in video, you add some polygones to the game. It would be nice to make an edges of some models smoother. For example, at the Lord`s field. The field has several levels (or planes) which are one above the other. Why not make the transitions between levels a little bit smoother? It would be more realistic, because there is no no sharp corners in nature.

And one more thing. Is it possible to blur the boundaries between some of the textures? I mean "rock and grass", "stone and sand", "water and sand" (but not "water and rock"). So, it`ll look more naturally, I think.

Anyway, you have been doing a great job. Good fortune, folks!

@Jorgam: The install directory is auto-detected, but this detection may go wrong, so you have to set it manually. Click on the "..." button and choose the root directory of 'Gothic II - Night of the Raven'. The condition to start the installation is, that there is "system\Gothic2.exe" in your chosen directory having the right version. I hope, this is helpful.

Hi Tod,
I am glad to read your comment! This mod is only a graphic overhaul, we won't change anything at the story or add new quests. Maybe an easter egg, but that's all. But there are other projects, which add new quest and fill missing content. Sadly they are in German and I don't know any like that in Russian. It's OK if you can't donate something! This site is online to promote our mod, not to collect donations. I edited your comment a little, please don't feel bad about it. You are welcome!

I am so amazed!! This is really awesome! KEEP IT UP. It is nice to see that there are still people working on this briliant game (my favourite). No matter time, graphic, or what, I would never stop playing it. Are you planing to remake the whole game ? If you are, will you keep the original quest concept? That is all I am willing to know. I am really not able to donate for many many reasons, sorry for that. God bless you.

(It is really idiotic for me to say to you "do this, do that" but it will be sooo great to see non-stop arena fighting in the game, and regular heavy guard’s armor) <3

Hallo Mystery,

Yesterday, when I tried to view the worldofgothic.com main page, I got an error message saying there is a problem with their database.

Personally I would like Gothic 3 and Arcania to be undone, but that's not possible. It would be nice to have a "real" Gothic 3 but now Risen is Piranha Bytes baby and the Gothic series is dead. I wonder why ~50% of the surveyed people wish for Gothic 5.. 'cause it means they would have to continue the story of Gothic 3.

We decided to setup the donation function to cover the costs of webhosting, which are fully paid by me. Sadly no one donated something until now, but it's OK. As long as people simply have no money at all or there is no new material, proving we are still working on this project, I can understand people not donating. But I despise people who generally think "This project is free of charge, why paying anything?!", because "free of charge" does not mean, that it's free of charge for both sides.

At last, I would thank you for this conversation and your praise.

About that business with PB, i dont really believe they would remake Gothic 1, normally remakes arent commercial and in that survey is winning the Gothic 5 choice... But it would be nice if they finally did it using your work. Who knows what will happen..

One more time, incredible work guys

I'm sorry, but I can't find this survey. Would you please post a link?

What I wanted to say is, that Piranha Bytes may buy our data and base their remake on it - this would basically make sense for the textures. I would be OK with it, because this project is running since years and it costs time and money. Yes, it's enjoyable to read comments in our forum/guestbook and talk to the poeple, but that's not enough to make us (especially me) invest hundreds or thousands hours of working into it. As we grow up, our spare time becomes less and less and therfore valuably.

Ohh thats a shame i didnt write it quite right, i admire very much your work xD
I meant the survey to the right of the portal, the one who has the choices Gothic 5, continue Risen series, not make any one else and the remake of G1.

What are you talking about with buy out the textures and meshes? I dont understand

Hello CSKR,
are you talking about this thread? It's not a real poll, so that's why I am not sure. I thought about it and I think we could make a deal with Piranha Bytes to buy-out the textures and meshes.

PS: Congratulation, your post was the 100th!

In any case, this is an amazing job! Please put more images

Hi!
I really admire your work on this mod.
I have a question, whether you are planning to add new trees, plants and bushes in the forests and open aereas, that looked really empty in the game.
3D grass maybe? What I consider the worst graphic part of the original game is the look on the forest from the far distance. I hope you have considered improving those.
Keep up the good work!

Hi ThielHater,
wow, I'm glad that you still remember my work, thanks for the compliments. Sorry, I didn't use a translator for the posts in German, I'll do it surely as soon as possibile. ^^
However, I see.... in both banners of Gothic 3 King Rhobar II and Risen there are wings, so It's really simple to confuse them, working with a lot of texture ! Good luck!

Hi Colmar,
thanks for posting. I know your armors texture patch and as I have to say, It's a really great work.

About this banner.. it's a bit confusing: As I wrote in post #77, I adopted it from Gothic 3. I dumped some Gothic 3 and Risen textures in a folder and a few weeks later, I decided to edit the flag. I remembered, that the flag texture was in this folder and used it as a resource, because the emblem on the Gothic texture is not recognizable and I was sure, that this is the banner of King Rhobar III.

I checked it and yes, it's really from Risen, not Gothic 3.

Hello ThielHater,
I've seen the last images and I'm really impressed. The rebuilding of the throne room is a wonderful surprise! But I have a question about something puzzling me: in the screenshot GothicMod 2010-08-23 17-23-19-60.jpg, with the Old Mine, there are banners from Risen. Is it a sort of easter egg or did you "borrow" that from Risen aiming to change it? However, keep up this good work!

Hello Anon X,
I appreciate people giving feedback to our work! I just wanted to explain why we changed the look of this object. It's true, that we want to keep the original style and atmosphere, but sometimes we change things. You should expect more changes at the Psi/Swamp Camp - hopefully most of them will suit the taste of the community.

Hi,
There is much right in your arguments. I only wanted to express my thoughts, because I love your work mainly for keeping close to the original feeling of the game. And for me, the old ore lanterns look was always a quite important part of the original feeling, and I got used to them. Anyway, your work is still impressive. Keep up the good work!

Hello Anon X,
I am happy to see you again. It's not like we are going to change ore to crystal in general, but in this case we decided to do so because of the objects name and the need for a bit freedom of art. Did you play Gothic II - The Night of the Raven? If so, you may remember these crystals. Using magic crystals as a source of light within the Gothic series is legitimate.

Hi,
Yes, you're right, I badly expressed what I was meaning (probably because of my English which isn't very good). I mean, that in Gothic by "ore" you mean nuggets which are smelted into weapons etc. Maybe the point should be then: Why change ore to crystals? And why should there be crystals if everywhere else you meet nugget-ore?

Hello Anon X,
ore "is a type of rock that contains minerals with important elements including metals". What you mean with "ore" is the metal that is extracted from the ore by melting the ore. Apart form that, you are missing a point: It's called "CrystalLight", not "OreLight". This means, the new design is derived from the name of the object. You are right when you say, that it looks different - but in our opinion it's proper this way.

Greetings

I must say, that I'm not sure about the new look of the magic ore "lantern" (CrystalLight_02 in gallery). IMO if it is "ore" it should look like... ore. The old nugget-like look was IMO proper, maybe it only need some additional glow or sparkling. Ore is something you smelt from nuggets, right? And ore rather don't look like crystals?

Hallo ThielHater,

Weiter so!

P.S.: @Katha: Hey, du bist mir spontan sympathisch!

Also gibts irgendwas neues?

Achja Weiblicher Gothic Fan *meld*

Ihr werdet erst im Sommer 2012 feritg???????????? NEIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi rover,
as you can read in the FAQ, we are hoping to finish this project until summer next year. Hmm.. I would say, it's very likely the level will be done until then.

Hallo Iva,

Entschuldigung.

Wow, I'm impressed how you put attention to details making it even 3D! That's sexy cool However, it's not important to me to have all things as much detailed and changed - it'll be nice enough if all improved elements will keep the same atmosphere and coloristic style as original ones (like it was said before). Good luck

@AxP, Wirth and mongo: Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad to hear, that the "new" look suits you.

@mongo: The old grate was only 2D, the new one is 3D.. take a look at this. For any reason there is the light green grate texture on it, I will fix it.

Hi! I was looking at the pics in the gallery and I'd like to say that grating (grille) texture in the middle of those pics old/new looks imo better on the old one. In the old one u know it's grating (grille) from the first sight, and the new one doesn't look like much (and has those two dark stripes running along). Maybe it's because of the angle in which those pics were taken, but I think the old grating texture was looking better. Anyway I'm impressed! Great job! :O (And I also think the same as Wirth)

It's sooo good that you didn't change the game's original feeling - especially the sky and grass and dirt colouring. In my opinion they're the elements which are essential in creating the specific rainy and forestal feeling of the mining colony. Hope you'll keep them this original way. Really appreciate your work guys.

Nice to see you again, sadly I have to disappoint you. There is no possibility to enhance those videos, except one. As you mentioned they have a poor quality, this is likely because the original videos have been converted at a low bitrate. I will contact PiranhaBytes and ask for a copy of the uncompressed videos. edit: Michael Rüve (managing director) answered me, that sadly there is no copy^^

@Tharr: If I got you right, you would like us to implement Gothic 2 controls? As far as I know, that's not possible. You are able to change the keyboard control settings ingame or by editing the Gothic.ini, so this means you are able to change the controls partially. But for example in Gothic 1, "action" always requires "key" + "arrow up", Gothic 2 only requires "key". So I think this is a part of the engine and can't be edited.
